What is the difference between terminating and stopping an EC2 instance?

Read this article to find out what are the differences between terminating and stopping an EC2 instance. This article is written by by well known DevOps trainer - Rajesh Kumar.

Answer

Terminate Instance

When you terminate an EC2 instance, the instance will be shutdown and the virtual machine that was provisioned for you will be permanently taken away and you will no longer be charged for instance usage. Any data that was stored locally on the instance will be lost. Any attached EBS volumes will be detached and deleted.  Read more click here

  1. This article about the difference between terminating and non-terminating symbols was easy to read and understand. I liked how it explained the topic in simple words so that even someone new to grammar or coding can follow without feeling confused. The clear examples helped show what each symbol does and why they are different. This made the idea feel less intimidating and more useful. The way the post broke the topic into small points helped me learn step by step and remember the main parts easily. This article is good for beginners who want to know the basics and build a strong foundation. Thank you for writing this in such a clear and simple way — it really helped me understand the difference.

  2. Thanks for this clear explanation! Understanding the difference between terminating and stopping an Amazon EC2 instance is crucial for cost management and data preservation in AWS. When you stop an EC2 instance, the virtual machine is shut down but the instance and its attached EBS volumes remain intact — you can restart it later with all your configurations and data preserved. In contrast, terminating an instance permanently deletes the virtual machine and typically removes any attached storage that isn’t configured to persist, meaning the instance cannot be restarted and any local data is lost. Knowing when to stop versus terminate helps manage billing effectively while protecting important data and system states. This makes the blog a great resource for beginners and intermediate AWS users alike!
